SAVING MONEY AT THE GROCERY STORE

Recently Scramble® subscribers have asked for some advice on saving money at the grocery store. Thanks for challenging me this way, and let me know if you find any of these suggestions useful.

First, I'm sure all of us realize that cooking at home is almost always so much cheaper than going out or ordering out - or even buying prepared foods (although sometimes those rotisserie chickens at the supermarket can be a great deal for $6 or so).

Here are some other suggestions which may help in saving even more money with the Scramble®:
  • Buy in bulk at stores like Costco--they have amazing deals especially on meat, chicken and fish, and you can break up the large packages before freezing them.  You can also buy large packs of shredded cheese and freeze portions of them.  Otherwise, it makes more financial sense to buy blocks of cheese and grate it yourself.
  • While you are at inexpensive or bulk grocery stores, stock up on these "Scramble staples": olive oil, brown and white rice, canned black, kidney, pinto and garbanzo beans, canned diced tomatoes, pasta sauce, tortillas, frozen chopped spinach, frozen peas, salsa, pasta, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic
  • Cooking with non-meat proteins like beans is always very economical--and healthy.
  • Look for sales on items you can store or freeze and stock up on.
  • Use seasonal produce to save money.
  • Frozen vegetables are also often a good deal and very healthy and easy to use.
  • Buy large containers of things like yogurt and applesauce (or what your family eats) instead of single serving sizes, and divide them into reusable containers yourself.
  • Try to stretch your budgtet by making a meal at the end of the week out of ingredients you haven't finished before returning to the grocery store.  Omelettes, quesadillas, and pasta sauce is a great, flexible option.
  • Pack up leftovers (sometimes it helps to do this before you even serve the meal so you don't overeat!) and use them for lunches the next day.  That way you get at least 2 meals in one.
